About the Building

This has been one building with no.24 possibly after closure of TSB.

The 1979/80 photograph of Nos 23, 24 & 25 shows a plaque below the small windows and the concrete.  “Pearl Assurance Company Limited”.  Above Nos 22 & 23 on the 1st floor brickwork, “Pearl Assurance House” probably in affixed letters.

Information from Abergavenny Local History Society Survey 1980:

Site cleared in 1970 for building of Pearl Assurance building.  Application for registration of Local Land changes, “demolition of existing two shops and erection of two shops with office accommodation above”. Dated 18 November 1966

1972 : Winifred’s Hat Shop [Source: Abergavenny Chronicle]

From 21 April 1970 to between 1995 & 1999  : Trustee Savings Bank  (this Bank was later taken over by Lloyds in 1995 and Lloyds rebranded TSB in 1999).  At this time, the building was owned by Pearl Assurance.  Upstairs were the offices of Redifusion (television rental company) [Source:  21 April 1970 Opening Abergavenny Chronicle]

Other Information

Bonmarche was founded in 1982 by Parkash Singh Chima on market stalls in Wiltex and Hartley.   In 2002, the company was taken over by Peacocks.  In 2012, Peacocks went into administration.  Bonmarche was then taken over by private investment company.   At present, there are 300+ stores in the UK and concessions (source bonmarche.co.uk)
