Thought to have been built as a pair of shops with no 21, with house premises above.
With no 21: Edwardian frontage showing skilled craftsmanship but overloaded with detail but said to have been built in 1712. Note the use of terracotta and the large & small window glass panes as sheet glass was coming in. (L Hurley). A photograph which can be dated to before 1892 shows a flush two storey brick front with three windows and a central doorway.
Probably the roof was raised to give added height to the second storey rooms when the frontage was rebuilt, probably in 1905, and the oriels and finials and the shop fronts were made. The back of the house may be the original 18th century one, which has an outside staircase to the first floor rooms. The present staircase has been turned around but has elegant balusters, possibly 18th century.
1989: MCC Planning No: 30634. Planning permission approved for Alterations and Additions to Shop and First Floor. No details given. Issued to Mr & Mrs C Craze 03/05/2009.
1979: MCC Planning No: 10987 Alt. Ref. No: DC/1979/01025. Planning permission was issued to Bernard Thorpe & Partners on10/10/1979 for a Change of Use from Office to Retail Shop.
1970’s: The extension at the back was made by Bernard Thorpe in the early 1970s. The garden abuts the Cibi Brook with fishing rights! A lot of straw was found under the floorboards in the 1970s, probably from packing around lamp glasses from when it was an ironmongers.[Mr Craze]
1950’s: In the 1950s, the original wooden water pipes were found probably laid in 1805 – see Minutes of the Improvement Commission. [Source: ALHS Survey 1980].
Recent History
2015: MCC Panning No: DC/2014/01142. This Planning Application was to extend the time period of Application DC/2009/00337 seeking approval for Modification to the rear of the property to provide an additional flat together with a detached dwelling to the north east of the site. There was to be no loss of commercial floor space from the development. The original application was approved and issued on 24/09/2009 but the private individuals who owned the property had not proceeded with the development in the approved 5 year time period allowed because of the UK economic climate at the time. The current application was for the period of consent to be extended and was Approved and issued to Mr Denver Rollings on 24/02/2015. A related Application No: DC/2014/01142 (Original DC/2009/00336) for Listed Building consent was also approved.
