About the Building

The previous building on this site was of local stone, built in the late 16th century and had a cruck roof. It was demolished in 1961 and an Elizabethan lattice window is now in the museum, also some 19th century wallpaper.

Printer’s proofs from 1810 – 53 were found hanging from the rafters in a walled-up attic including street ballads and execution broadsheets and a Moore’s almanack for 1836.

There were four cottages at the rear. Photographs of the old building can be found in the museum.

The text from newspaper extract above:

‘These buildings, number 2, 3 and 4 have long since been replaced, and they show something of the interesting facades and roofline which once graced the town centre.

In addition to being a printer, bookseller and stationer, Mr Crockford claimed to have “all the latest novelties in fancy article” as well as photographs in great variety of the town and neighbourhood.

As the picture clearly shows, those were the days when newspaper contents bills detailed all the important stories of the issue and the keener sighted will be able to discern what was news at the time.’
