Recent History

March 2024 : Phone Review moved from 1 High Street  Phone Review was at 1 High Street for unknown length of time  (building was seen to be in very poor state of repair)   They closed at No. 1 some time in late 2023 and moved to No.2

1990 – 2023 May:  Cancer Research Charity shop, moved to 6 High Street.

Other Information

1952-1981 From 1952 (2 and 2a): Curry’s, selling bikes, prams, radiograms etc. Selling cycles, TVs and electrical goods by 1956. In 1959 washing machines were being sold, and “103 payments of 12/4d” were distributed. In 1960 advertisement for a TV and electrics boy to do general duties. In 1962 a salesman over 21 needed, £10 starting wage + commission.  In 1981 Currys moved to 13, High Street. [Source: ALHS survey 1980+]

1920 September 16th – 1944 John Berry (2a)  Boot dealer, later boot & hardware dealer [Source: ALHS survey 1980] This information suggests that it was separate shops for longer than indicated in the About the Building section of this page. Or was Berry stores owned by him?

Edward Baker was the owner prior to 1877 and died on 14th January 1914, after which his daughter Gladys Barrington Daniel (nee Baker), widow of Algernon Daniel, became owner and sold to Mr Berry in 1920.  In 1891 Edward Baker also had No 1 High Streeet  [Source: ALHS survey 1980]
