About the Building
Information from Abergavenny Local History Society Survey 1980:
Both 25/25A : Demolished in 1977 due to large cracks in the fabric.
Replaced by “Red Square” (named because of the large red girders that were used)
All three shops (nos 25, 25A & 26) were bought by the Highways Dept for road widening in 1922. They became the property of the Borough Council and finally of Monmouth District Council. (source at time of original survey : Mrs Bevan, 5 Flannel Street)
No. 25 : the staircases were very narrow, but plenty of room above. Mrs Powell brought up her family here. In the cellar there were 3ft thick stone arches and tombstones. The whole shop appeared to be supported by a single beam (source at time of original survey : Mrs Bevan, 5 Flannel Street)
At time of last survey, Cardiff Museum had photographs of the buildings, including the cellars, arches and tombstones found in the cellars, taken just before the demolition.
Recent History

See “About the building”. The display windows are now used for promotion of local events.
The mural depicting the town and surrounding area was originally painted in 2000 by Frances Baines. It was restored by the artist and Helen & Stuart Absalom in 2014 [Restoration Source: Alamy, ‘The Abergavenny Millennium Mural” ID: 2AGRH2B viewed 12/9/2025]
