Abergavenny Local History Society

Abergavenny Local History Society was formed in 1977 and is a registered charity (Registration number 1098582).

The aims of the Society are :

1. To promote the local community’s knowledge of and interest in history
2. To provide local historical and general interest information for visitors
3. To support Abergavenny Museum and Castle

Its activities consist of a programme of talks, visits, guided walks and research. The Research Group maintains the Street Survey alongside a varied programme of research activities and publications.

In addition to the Street Survey, the Society:

  • Created and maintains the Victorian Garden next to Abergavenny Museum.
  • Devised and erected the Ceramic Plaques Trail around the town, which was researched by the Society with local schools.
  • Erected Blue Plaques around town.
  • Produces publications about the history of Abergavenny.
  • Produces a journal, the Gobbanium Gazette.

Membership is £20 per annum.
