About the Building

Eastmans still in mosaic on front doorstep. Upper front of the building has three windows. A side alley leads to the rear and is an entrance to the flats above.

Probably Victorian, note the purple & grey slates making a pattern on the roof.

1990: MCC Planning No: 32657. Alt. Ref. No: DC/1990/00417. Approval issued to Connaught carpets on 05/08/1990 for Existing Flats to be Used as a Sales Area.

1975: MCC Planning No: 03025. Alt. Ref. No: DC/1975/01007. Approval for Change of Use to Take-Away Food Shop issued to Mr G. Jones on 09/06/1975.

1949: A/144 – 1985 Abergavennny Chronicle 7th October 1949. Painting of Frogmore Street Shows a 2 storey building on this site.

Recent History

2025: October Bar V24. Cocktail Bar. Not operational. [Personal Observation].

2020: MCC Planning No: DM/2020/00864. Alt. Ref. No: PP-08761757. Approval was issued on 30/09/2021 for a change of use from Retail to a Cocktail Bar but thus far (April 2026) it has not been implemented.

2019: September: ZaZa’s Barber : This was originally in Whitehorse Lane;  this did not open until later in 2020. Oher part of No. 24 : Ladies Emporium – selling ladies’ fashions – from c 2014  Closed 2019.[ALHS Survey 1980+].

Other Information

1921: The building was occupied by Mr Leo Hughes (Age 25) and his wife Gwendolyn (Age 24). Mr Hughes was employed by Eastman’s at this address as a Butcher Manager. [Source:1921 Census].

1901: The premises was occupied by Mr James Cromwell (Age 37) his wife Caroline (Age 38) together with three daughters, one son and two boarders. There were two visitors also recorded on the Census report. Mr Cornwell and the two boarders were working on site in the Butchery business. [Source 19o1 Census].
