About the Building

Late 18th century shop [Source: Coflein NPRN: 37041 see https://coflein.gov.uk/en/site/37041 ]

Directly linked to Nos 11 and 23 Market Street.  The late Mr Jackson used to call often to see the stone steps from cellar to road level.  NOTE: Raised medievel pavement and hood mouldings over windows. [Source: J C Charles]

Date 1560’s but cast iron columns have replaced the timbered ones.  The hood mouldings and barge boards have been replaced but are similar to the originals, as is the shape of the cruciform window looking down Cross Street, though the opening sash is of course later.

There is timber framing inside, as in all the houses in High Street before the fairly recent demolition. [Source L Hurley]

The ALHS 1980 Street survey has: “1851 Patrick Cusak, (he was the Nightwatchman in the census 1820’s). His son was a brightsmith, his daughters, dressmakers, (see no 2).”

Patrick Cusak is shown on the 1851 Census for Abergavenny as living in the High Street but no street numbering was used at this date.  The next entry is for Cross Street, but depending on which side the enumerator went up first there is no guarantee that this entry is for No 2 High Street.  [Source: 1851 Census accessed 26/1/2026]

1910 William Williams was also at 60 Tudor Street

1850 Edward Baker was in Frogmore Street in 1850 [source: ALHS survey 1980]
