About the Building

The property was built for the Crawshaw Bailey Estate Office

There was an outdoor bowling green situated at the rear of the stables between the Market Chambers and the Market Tavern (now Julian Dyer Chartered Surveyor & Estate Agent). source: Horsington.

This area now (2015) contains a small poorly built building occupied by a cashbroker/pawnbroker, a yard, and a warehouse selling pet meat.

1872 July 13: Advertisement announcing that James Straker has commenced a business as an Auctioneer, Valuer, Land and Estate Agent [Source: County Observer and Monmouthshire Central Advertiser Abergavenny and Raglan Herald Usk and Pontpool Messenger and Chepstow Argus 1872 July 13 p.1].

1872 June 9: Mr James Straker founded the Auctioneer, Valuer, Land and Estate Agent business.  In late 1898 William Chadwick (known as ‘Wm’) commenced his articles with Messrs Barber & Son from Wellington in Shropshire. In 1903, William Chadwick joined Mr Tomkins forming the business known as Tomkins & Chadwick in Frogmore Street. Mr James Straker joined the partnership in 1910 and in 1912 it was renamed J. Straker, Son & Chadwick. In 1947 William Chadwick’s sons, Reggie and Peter, joined the partnership, which was renamed J. Straker, Chadwick & Sons, the name that remains today.  William Chadwick (William Chadwick’s grandson) joined the business in 1970, followd by Lyndon Trumper in 1989.
