About the Building

It seems probable that this property was formerly part of the Great George Inn.

The cellars of the Inn extend under 5A and No 5.

Recent History

From about 1988 to November 2024 :  The Jewellery Workshop – on this site since about 1988. The jewelleryworkshop website says that the shop had been open “for the past 36 years”.  Two men – one was large, one was small.  They divided the work neatly – the larger man worked on jewellery – repairs and adapting older pieces as well as sale of new jewellery.  The smaller man  – did all work on timepieces – repairs to watches and clocks, replacing batteries, as wll as sale of new watches and clocks

They were an institution, with frequent long queues in the shop.   The shop was badly damaged by the fire that destroyed Sundarbon Indian Restaurant nearby (3/1/2015 see entry for Sundarbon). The restaurant and other buildings affected were all eventually restored.

As they got older, they cut their working days until eventually were only open a couple of hours a week.  Assume they retired, the shop closed in November 2024.

1979-1980: Car accessories & maps on ground floor, other floors store, proprietor Mr Glyn Jones since 1954.

No directory history before 1901
