About the building

Source : Abergavenny Local History Society Survey 1980:

Demolished in 1977, due to large cracks in the fabric. The area became known as “Red Square” due to the colour of the girders used to shore up the buildings.

There were originally three lock-up shops (see also nos 25 and 25A)

No 26 pre-1978

Recent history

Source : Abergavenny Local History Society Survey 1980:

From 1973 to 1977 : Kaydee (with no.25) : Milliner (advert in Abergavenny Chronicle in 1973 advertises this same named shop as selling “curtains and covers”)

From 1952, also with Gethyn Jones on 1st floor : ladies’ hairdresser (see “Other Information” for adverts relating to this hairdresser’s premises. Appears to have been there for many years under different names but with this same owner – 1961 ‘Mavis Jones’, 1962 ‘Lareine Hairstylists’, 1971 & 72 ‘Mavis’)

In the 1940s : “Dorothy” hat shop and haberdashery;  and also at some stage Lyons sweet shop
