About the building

This house has been variously numbered as 2A or 4 Lower Monk Street after the building of new Hereford Road caused the renaming and renumbering of Monk Street from the corner with Hereford Road to Ross Road junction.

This was the Chief Constable’s office and residence of the deputy chief constable, upstairs.

Recent history

In the 1947 rate book it is listed as Monmouthshire County Constabulary Offices, Club House and Garage.
